This was a photos shoot of the Post War Orchestra. They are a group of musicians who imagine an era when all conflicts have been resolved and militaria is therefore redundant. The PWO recycles weapons, transforming them into musical instruments.
Some of their instruments include a theremin made out of a World War I Heavy Maxim Machine Gun and guitars and flutes created from WWI Lee Enfield rifles.
They recently launched a Kickstarter project to raise funds to create news instruments for their project. Thomas Dolby and some other notable musicians are collaborating.
I think it's a nice idea, though I wish the video on the kickstarter featured more of their music. The music they did have in the video seemed a bit . . . too World Music for my tastes, but I think it's a nice project. I will admit that it was a bit of a bummer seeing a Lee Enfield turned into a flute though.
I agree, it's an awesome statement. I was recently listening to NPR and heard of an organization that builds violins and other orchestral instruments out of scraps because in the areas they are in, a violin is so valuable that even if it was gifted to a child via philanthropy, the family would sell it. The "scrap yard" instruments hold little value and therefore the children use them. I'm on my phone now but will attempt to find a link later. Cool post and "welcome to Hubski".
Is that guitar electric or not? I can't tell if that's a pickup or just a regular bridge. There doesn't seem to be any cables coming out of it, but if it's an acoustic or classical, especially without a sound hole, there's no way he's heard over the theremin.
