The dumb thing is that "read receipts" were available in Eudora 1.0 and are what makes WhatsApp functional. It gives you "typing" and "recording message" notifications, too, but simply knowing that the message was delivered and viewed is plenty. Meanwhile "someone is typing" only works when text messaging on iOS because RCS is a fucking dumpster fire.

Interesting story, but personally I don't get the anxiety angle. I can feel anxious UNTIL I see that someone's typing, then I relax because I know a response is coming.
Most often I feel impatience.
