Had a friend mention this today. Gave me a glimmer of hope for what this U.S. election may become.
I also am keeping in mind that our worst fears often lie in anticipation and are rarely realized.

The last free and fair German election in 1932 had an 80% turnout, compared to 84%, 81%, and 75% in the previous three elections.

Two interesting features of the data. First, the 2000 election was one of the most consequential in a long time, given the Iraq War, so it's jarring to see how little people though of leadership in that time. Second, it's amazing how many people came around to thinking elections matter by 2016 in contrast to how low voter turnout was. Something seems wrong there to me.
