Dear Tim-
There are probably more serious grievances that should hit your inbox today (glances at Dark Sky acquisition), but I thought I'd just ask:
"Can you please make a powerful phone with high end cameras that uses a fingerprint reader instead of facial recognition? Or at least give me a finger print reader somewhere on the high end phones as an option?"
Guess what doesn't work in bright sunlight? your facial recognition.
Guess what doesn't work well with sunglasses? your facial recognition.
Guess what doesn't work well unless you have your face RIGHT IN FRONT of the camera? your facial recognition.
Guess what doesn't work with facemarks? your facial recognition.
it's a little thing
I'm being petty
sure you just released the iPhone SE2.0 which powerful chips and a fingerprint reader... but the camera is.... tired.

Face recognition works brilliantly. It's only as smart as the user. Watch someone set up their new iPhone... do they hold it up high and get a nice angle - the "selfie angle" - so it gets a good image of them? Or are they slumped on the couch with the phone on their belly, looking up at three double chins and a frowny face? (Which is the way you look at your phone 99.993% of the time.) Everyone I have met who complains about facial recognition, I just say, "Unlock your phone for me." And they inevitably have to hold the phone way up high like they are taking a selfie. Me? I held the phone down below my face near my chest. Then lifted it slightly to directly in front of me. My phone unlocks when I have a beard or not. My phone unlocks with glasses (regular and sunglasses) or with contact lenses. My phone unlocks without me having to do anything weird, when it is in the phone holder on the dashboard of my car. My phone unlocks when I lift the face shield on my MOTORCYCLE HELMET. (Ok. Not ALL the time. But most of the time it works.) Face recognition works exactly as well as the data you give it to work with. (In my experience.)
touché. I'll go re-train my phone from a lower angle and see if that helps. I've just been surprised by how bad it does with weird sunlight, or certain angles. That surprises me - but pleasantly. Thanks for sharing your experience - it gives me a little hope.Face recognition works exactly as well as the data you give it to work with

There is the option to set up an ‘alternate appearance’ that may work with the face masks. I have not tested this for myself. Personally I have not had the experience you have with the facial recognition, but when I set mine up I distinctly recall it asking me to move the camera around so that it could capture my mug from various angles. ETA: Attempted the "alternate appearance" today while wearing one of my handmade masks, phone told me to GTFO.
Agreed. I upgraded, and stopped at the iphone 8 for the sole reason that it has fingerprint unlock only. I don't know how many times a day that grab my phone while sitting, open it with a thumbprint, and with a sideways glance, get a quick update of what I need. No need to stare toward my own crotch awkwardly, or disrupt my line of site by sticking a phone into it. My wife went with the XR, facial recognition only, and she's often bothered by it. Definitely first world problems. :)
