I listened live to the opening statements by Schiff and Nunes and the first two interviewees. The Republicans are playing hopscotch during 3rd grade recess, and the Democrats are hunting for goddamn bear with a howitzer. It's fortunate that the Republicans are so craven and totally lacking in any integrity... otherwise I would feel really bad for them. We always knew Nunes was a simp and a weasel, but today, he reached a low that ANYONE can recognize from the playground: When you have nothing material to say about the issue, drag in a bunch of other completely irrelevant stuff to try and distract people. The problem is, that his statement wasn't even crafted elegantly to hide what he's doing: He basically said it outright. And calling the Official Whitehouse "Transcript" of the Ukraine call a "false document, fabricated by the Democrats" is ... ... nah fuck it. It's not even worth mentioning. It is expected. The Republicans are using Austin Powers movies as documentaries about How to Be Evil. It's just so ..... sad.

It is so hard to watch this. Jim Jordan in particular is a disgusting human being. Everything thus far from the Republicans end are denial of the facts in front of them. Maybe I'll go retake that Canadian immigration survey to see if I still qualify.
I guarantee you do. Canada is very frank about the fact that their population would collapse without immigration. At the same time, the more young people who leave, the deeper the hole the country falls into before the grifters and charlatans die off. Progress comes one funeral at a time. On a basic level, Trump happened because there were a bunch of people who felt their current representation didn't hear them. Trump makes them feel heard. (cue American President "drink the sand" speech) Speaking from a fatalist, Machiavellian perspective, the world was better off when they were voiceless. Most of them are good, honest, earnest people whose lifestyles were doomed for reasons unrelated to the choices they made but now that they're staring at The End they're looking for someone to blame and simple beats complex any day. If the Democrats had made the slightest attempt to take care of their concerns we wouldn't be here but the Democratic party has been busy waving their hands and praising globalism. So the best possible outcome now is to shame them into listening to Trump less. I'm not sure how you defeat populism, but I hope this is a start.
I think I really need to see what happens legally and politically from all of this. What the 2020 elections look like across the country. I'm having a lot of trouble identifying with this country and am worried about the long term impact on an underlying cultural and human condition level.
