This is probably the most obviously corrupt thing I've ever seen a US-based government do. I can't help but remember that The Onion called it back in 2000.
One would expect that if this were done to conceal evidence that an obstruction charge would be in the offing. I'm no lawyer, and I know there are hot debates about what construes obstruction, but can there be a more clear cut case than intentionally destroying the only evidence on which a serious civil claim rests a mere hours after the claim is filed?

I mean, on paper, yes. But that requires evidence, and we have a pretty poor track record of holding public officials accountable lately.
