I've had the pleasure of working for an extraordinary boss. He gets 8 for 8 on this scale. You never know how good you've got it until you get a new boss who.... is just average.

I couldn't agree more steve. I've had some great ones and some bad ones over the years. My favorite are bosses that show you enough respect to let you get your work done, your way. They are not concerned with the process, just the outcome. They leave you alone but are there for you when you need guidance.
The best bosses foster so much respect from their employees that the employee fears failure, not because it will anger the boss but because it will disappoint the boss. The biggest mistake any leaders ever make is 5. Motivation comes from vision, not from fear. Nobody is inspired by fear. When people lead by fear the weak employees get scared and will work just hard enough to not lose their jobs. The strong ones find better jobs. My current leader is new to the position and I have to say that for how green his is, he's doing a pretty good job. At this point in my career though, I just wouldn't tolerate a bad boss, I'd go elsewhere or work to transfer or have the boss displaced. -Life's too short.
