Do the youth in China realize that they are being so heavily suppressed regarding their freedoms of expression and the policing of the internet? Sometimes you don't realize these things till you've experienced another culture. -Like yourself, it sounds like.
As for the materialism, I think you make a great point: ....this mentality was a result of China being poor for the past couple decades
-New money always buys the flashiest cars, the biggest houses etc. It's why over 70% of retired NFL players end up declaring bankruptcy. Let's hope for China's sake, they aren't so reckless.

I think most people know it, at least from what I know from my relatives and friends in China. However it's more that people don't care about it, or doesn't think it's a big deal, or too afraid to express it, or thinks that buying expensive houses, cars, clothes, bags, makeup prioritize above everything else. People buy designer items and newest gadgets that are beyond their wealth just to showoff. Somehow money, and the associations with wealth and nothing else dominate people's lives. Anyways I hope it'll change.
