I'm moving cross-country soon and the bulk of the trip will be on I-80 through Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Iowa. I've already looked up all the silly roadside attractions, but is there anything super awesome along that stretch (or a nearby detour) that I should keep my eye out for?
For Utah. You'll be passing Park City, It's very nice this time of year, and the Mountain Resort has some cool things like the Alpine Slide, or a sweet zip-line. Plenty of nice places to eat in Park City as well. Driving through the Canyon will have some nice picnic spots. In Salt Lake the Hogle Zoo is close and has been recently remodeled and built upon. and The Natural History Museum of Utah and Red Butte Gardens at the University of Utah are really cool too. Downtown Salt Lake has Temple Square that is really nice with a lot to see nearby including the newish City Creek outdoor Mall, Mormons everywhere, but at least they're nice. Even if there's not a concert going on, stopping at Saltair right by the Great Salt Lake is always interesting, it's an old rundown building with a lot of interesting History. Skull Valley is boring, we mostly go out there for target practice. But the Bonneville Salt Flats are pretty cool too and worth seeing.
Don't know how far into Iowa you are going, but if you're passing by Des Moines, the East Village is a can't-miss. You should absolutely visit Raygun and grab a bite at Zombieburger at the minimum. Depends on when you're going, but if you go during RAGBRAI, visit one of the towns they stop in. You don't need to have a bike or anything, just join the party. Lastly, stop by any supermarket parking lot and buy sweet corn straight from one of the stands that set up in the parking lot. The downtown Des Moines farmers market is great for this too. Best of luck with your move!
There's In-n-out in Utah, I'm sure there's one in Salt Lake and in St George. Also, if you're ever in Cody, Wyoming, just ask for Wild Bob.
While not so much an attraction, the I-80 truckstop is supposedly the largest in the world. It has a movie theater, a buffet diner, and a lot of fast food places amongst other things. Honestly it's not all that impressive but is definitely worth the stop to check it out and look around. It's mostly geared towards truckers because they have stores there (like a chiropractor) that is of use to someone who drives 12 hours a day for a living. Won't take up your entire day but I would recommend checking it out when you pass it. Should be near the Nebraska/Iowa border.
