It's a shame that Malcolm Gladwell exists, of course, but golf happens to be something you can indeed get very good at if you spend 10000 hours on it.
I've been following the dan plan for a while, it's been really interesting to see his progression. Also inspirational, of course. The details of "10,000 hours" doesn't really matter to me other than an example of it never being too late to put your mind to something and get really good at it.
I had forgotten all about this. I'm rooting for the guy.Right now, Dan has 3,997 hours left. That’s roughly four more years of swinging clubs. Susie worries her son is spending his prime years playing golf. But she’s not surprised — he’s always done his own thing.
-You know, I don't really buy this and I'll tell ya why. ... how many of us are spending equivalent amounts of time doing mundane things? Most people aren't even getting better at something, they're just going through motions. Lets say you have a data entry job, are you actually getting better at a skill? Probably not. I would go as far as to suggest that dedicating yourself to getting better at anything and spending this amount of time doing so probably instill some pretty kick ass goal setting skills and focus.
