I think a remarkable amount of our "data of questionable utility" is a consequence of the graduate thesis. Not saying that someone did their thesis on the lactose in sea lion milk, but I'll bet someone did a graduate thesis involving sea lions that, at some point, had a real need for a nutritional analysis on sea lion milk. And here we are.
