One of my favorite games of all time.
Anyone remember:
The object of this game is figure out the object of this game.
We played the forerunner to Zork, simply called 'Adventure', on a terminal at Oakland University. It printed out text on green and white striped paper -no screen. We played for hours... It was absolute magic. Must have been 1977 or thereabouts. Good memories, very good memories.

Hell yeah. There is a lot to be said for the power of the imagination. It has qualities no audio/visual can touch. That's why I have a fondness for tabletop RPGs. :) I almost pity kids these days. They are always given more, when sometimes less is so much more fun. Well, actually now that I think of it, there is Minecraft. I wont even touch that game. It looks like too much fun.

I rarely play RPGs anymore... Last one my kids got I couldn't recognize. It was full of movement rules and miniature placement, it was I think replacing imagination with arguable rules. Made me think the designers got into too many arguments with their DMs. So sad. I love to see my kids still dress in costumes and run around the back yard, carrying out 'cat warrior' adventures. Imagination is alive and well.

Makes me feel sad that I missed out on the era of text-based adventure games; they were before my time.

There's a hobbyist community still making these games. They're free and many of them are quite good: http://ifdb.tads.org/search?sortby=rcu&newSortBy.x=0&...
No reason why you can't live the adventure today! http://pot.home.xs4all.nl/infocom/zork1.html
Protip: Stay out of the dark. :) Honestly, the game does have a great mix of humor, puzzles, and exploration.

This is fun, took up way too much of my time though... but fun.

Thanks for linking it. I'm, well, lost. But at least I've discovered where that line "You are likely to be eaten by a grue" comes from.
I should make a map...

Spoiler alert. http://almy.us/image/dungeon.jpg This was the one used by the developers, if I remember correctly.
"You are likely to be eaten by a grue" I think it should say very likely. :)
