For those in need of a refresher, Megaupload was the one hit with a takedown notice by UMG on music that clearly didn't belong to UMG:

I never quite understood Megaupload. I hadn't read any specific articles on it but I always thought that it was in clear violation of copyright law.
Did they actually host and stream the content or they provided or did they only provide embedded links to others that were streaming?

They were a file hosting service, just like Rapidshare or Mediafire, and claimed to follow the DMCA takedown procedures. If this is true, they should have safe harbor protections. However, the indictment alleges that the operators of the site were involved in a conspiracy to upload copyrighted materials and pay others to upload copyrighted materials as well.
