author unknown.I was gonna make this its own post, but it fits here better as it's slightly relevant: one of the oldest known sentences of Dutch There was a munk in the 11th century who translated a Latin verse into her own language (Old Dutch) and what that image reads is: Hebban olla vogala nestas hagunnan hinase hi(c) (a)nda thu uuat unbidan uue nu which looks a lot like Dutch now: Hebben alle vogels nesten begonnen behalve ik en jij, waar wachten we nu (op)? Which translates as All the birds have begon building their nests except you and I, what are we waiting for? I think it is a really poetic sentence on settling down (or on relationships ending, as in why haven't we settled down yet). Also, about a month ago an app was created where you can hear famous Old Dutch stories as they were supposed to have sounded centuries ago, with a karaoke-style read-along, so you can hear how Hebban olla vogala must have sounded. Too bad I don't have an iPad to try it out.
