I've had the yamazaki 25. It's good but a bit harsher than one would expect of a whiskey of that age. I'm told that's because they age in new barrels. Sadly, I'm not too familiar with Japanese whiskey. It's something I'd like to acquaint myself with more.

I've heard the Yamazaki 12 is the only one worth bothering with. I've been underwhelmed by pretty much every edible Japanese foodstuff I've ever had and at $60, I'd rather have a bottle of Laphroag and a bottle of Beam.

Just regular old Beam?

The point being a bottle of Yamazaki costs as much as a decent bottle of Islay and a moderate bottle of bourbon combined.

Ah ok . . .

Hmm. In the article it says that particular whisky uses sherry casks but I don't really know anything about the refilling or re-appropriation of casks, so maybe "new" has some other meaning than "unused"?

It's possible that I could be confusing the 25 for a younger whiskey. It's been a while.

I'm afraid there is only one solution to this problem . . . and that solution is Suntory Yamazaki 25.
