Only 12% trust the press to accurately report scientific findings. Well, there's a good reason for that one, at least.

"Detox" is pseudoscience for "diet", got it. I thought this had something to do with quitting drugs.

The English in this article: "Now it has been more than 30 years and the phone has lost their weights, batteries are even lighter and increasingly sharper screens and incorporating Internet more and more functions."

Is it just me, or did the author not credit any research? I found that off-putting.

Your guess is as good as mine.

You can build living things out of non-living parts. Why can't you build a free will out of deterministic parts?

You're welcome. And thank you for making me glad to be getting old.

That warms my heart. And makes me laugh.

Then they admitted the device doesn't do anything yet. A colour one would be so great for fashion though!

fudog  ·  3118 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Yes, that $750 generic pill is a pure artifact of regulation

The solution is to change regulations, not to have a free market (at least not free as in anarchy). The current regulations are the response to free markets on drugs in the early twentieth(?) and before which lead to heroin cough syrup and people dying from snake oil treatments. There needs to be regulation to ensure safety, and the regulations need to change when people exploit them.

fake eggs

gutter oil

I don't want any shady food like this on shelves at all, myself, regardless of labelling.

I don't know how common it is, but here's some advice: I've on and off been attracted to a lot of women, many of whom I managed to resist for whatever reason. (Dating someone else, awful person, they weren't attracted to me.) You know what? I didn't accidentally ravage any of these women, nor did my pecker fall off, nor did I embarrass myself. So don't worry, I'm sure you'll be all right too.

You're making it too complicated. Feelings can't victimize you if you don't let them. You don't really want her so you don't hit on her. Or, you decide your feelings are valid and you do hit on her. It's really up to you. You seem to think your feelings are going to sabotage you somehow. Do you not have a will?

You can't get rid of your feelings, but you should be able to not act on them if you wish. The feelings will go away in time on their own. At worst, they'll go away when she does after study group is done.

fudog  ·  3120 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: How They Got Their Guns

The only real pattern seems to be "bought their guns legally" and had some crime or mental illness history. Aaron Alexis even tried and failed to get treated twice. Making mental health services accessible and free-of-charge might have improved at least five of those scenarios.

There were two or three shooters that could have been prevented if the background checks hadn't failed in some way.

What would've stopped Vester Flanagan? The shooting was his first crime. (There were some indications he was an asshole, but no charges or mental problems.) This is why people think that these shootings are never going away.

" If you have multiple hunters, they aren't special, they aren't distinguishing themselves from the entire rest of the group - they're a subunit - meanwhile it's better for the group because redundancy"

But it's better for the individual person in the group to be irreplaceable. If I'm the only hunter, everyone will work to protect me and I get all the ladies. It's evolution, not politics.

fudog  ·  3158 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Philosophy experiment: Should You Kill the Fat Man?

The torture scenario is unrealistic. If torture were 70% effective, it would be morally permissible. Torture is barely effective. People lie under torture all the time. That's part of the reason it's wrong.

Do you think this is ethical? Why wouldn't it be ethical? You can make babies or have pets, and no one minds.

Is it okay to create a Tulpa that is based on a TV show, book, or other media? It could be argued you ought to own a copy of the book first because you're sort of making a copy for personal use. On the other hand, thoughtcrime is a pretty gross concept.

Is it okay to have multiple tulpas? You can have multiple children, pets or anime body pillows if you want.
