I agree with Quatrarius. There really is no 'self'. I think it comes down to how much a person needs to belong vs. how much authenticity they require. We all need both of these things, but they are at odds with one another.

I would remake myself to a small degree in order to be better able to navigate society, but I would also try very hard to preserve as much of 'myself' as possible in order to feel 'authentic'.
