Slight background, Bill Maher had a tirade against liberals for fearing to criticize the Muslim world. Not sure how much expose I'd like to give Maher, since I think he's a bit of a buffoon, but I thought Reza's response was well worded, and he's got a fair bit of credibility to back himself up.
This exploded on my facebook recently, I was so blown away and I think it easily tops the other viral interview he did when Zealot was released. Reza Aslan needs his own show, or podcast, or something, he's incredible!
Reza has some of the best TV appearances I've ever seen. Here's another clip that demonstrates his patience and poise: Edit: There was an article just recently posted that picks apart some of Reza's arguments in another video. Regardless of whether or not you agree with his conclusions and premises, I don't think anyone will disagree with the hosts asking terrible questions and Reza handling the situation very well.
I enjoy Maher's show for the (usually) intelligent panel he brings to the table. I find Bill himself rather grating. If he disagrees with a view he'll dodge the argument with hyperbole and ultimatums. I still find the show pretty thought provoking. Thanks for this. I've heard a little about Reza but I've never looked into it. His points are much more elegant.
This was great. It's so goddamn obvious that the CNN talking heads have an agenda they want confirmed. I'm glad Aslan can bring a level of nuance to the discussion that is necessary, despite how difficult it must be to articulately and politely deliver any point on live television when people are just badgering you. I feel like I'd freeze up and just shake my head in disgust. +1
Also popped up on my facebook feed lately and as somebody who has to deal with the "you Muslims" wording on a daily basis I couldn't argue better than he did. I just loved how calm he stays during the interview, something I could not do in the same situation due to my cultural baggage. But I do my best to try!
