Happiness = Reality - Expectations
"I suppose I could be President... but is politics really the truest calling of my heart? No, no...that would be settling.
I've always hated this bullshit, wrapping the current situation that Gen Y currently sits in as self-loathing and delusional expectations. For example: When the article talks about the generations it talks about Gen Y and their grandparents. It completely ignores Gen X and whatever situation they were in. Sure their Gen Y's grandparents worked hard, but what did Gen X then do? They sat around smoking pot during college and then graduated into a job. No Fuss. No Nothing. Did I ask for that meaningless trophy? No, Gen X did, because they need to feel like their child means something. Did Gen Y ask teachers to curve their grades so that everyone gets an A? No Gen X did because God forbid their child isn't exceptional. When Gen X graduated from college they expected to get a job, and they got it. Yet I have the AUDACITY to expect the same thing and I get shit on for being delusional. Get off your high fucking horse and clean up the mess you made because its not my problem, its yours.
Wow, I'm not even in Gen Y but this article makes me feel sorry for them. The author decides that a racist term is a suitable moniker for his straw people. This is not acceptable. Seeing the racist term over and over as subject headers ("Gypsys Are Taunted", "GYPSYs Are Delusional") only compounds the author's privilege. What made me realize this was not worth my time was this condition of membership for his straw people: Dismissing ANYONE for going to a therapist is shameful. It does not matter whether you think a person's neurosis is frivolous because the person seeking help wants to get to seeing it as frivolous as well. The big point about this article, outside the blinding white privilege and name calling, is this idea that tossing the blame on a generation solves anything. What's the goal after tossing a bunch of horrible attributes at a group? Do you think you're appealing to the future cyborg overlords for clemency by saying you're not precious? I just don't see why this warranted anyone's attention, except to feel better about not being on the author's scheisse list. I award no dots to it.- you've been to a therapist without any severe mental illness.
Great read, and I can relate to what is said there. As someone born in this called Gen Y, my day to day frustration with life is about not really doing anything I am passionate about, even tough my current job gives me a good and secure life style. I wish I was special...
How does any thoughtful individual use "upwardly mobile" to describe the US economic state?
Interesting and fun little read. Enjoyed this quite a bit, as this is a subject I've talked with my fiancee and friends and co-workers about off and on over the years. I've always just called that generation "Trophy Kids". My buddy calls them "Mr. Rogers' Soldiers", always got a kick out of that one. I was born in 1981, really thankful I had a strict and stern father who enlightened me to the "everyones special" culture and why it's bullshit very early on in my life.
