The truth is, while revenues may have seen an uptick that makes for breathless headlines, odds are that profits will have suffered equally as dramatically over the past few days as retailers pulled out all stops and competed head-to-head for cherry-picking and cash-constrained customers who are still in no position to spend like they once did.
Sounds like customers are getting a better deal then they normally would have. Steep discounting, longer hours and earlier sales times, easier credit terms, free shipping, and extra services all sound like a win for consumers. Corporate profits have done pretty well the past few years, Seems like some of the bounty might be trickling down to the consumer. Now if we could just move enough goods to soak up excess capacity, we might have an economy again.
