Wait, the US doesn't have maternity leave? That strikes me as crazy. That, and not using the metric system... I'm surprised, too, that the most common Irish surname is Murphy. I would've guessed that it was Kelly.

Oh that old chestnut. The metric one. At least we don't use "stone" as a measure of weight . . . I'm ok with metric for most things, but I don't like Celcius. It's not intuitive. Sure, for the freezing/boiling temp. of water it is, but for human comfort it isn't. 30 degrees doesn't even sound hot. Edit: You were surprised that a country without public healthcare and basic services available for everyone, would have no maternity leave?!
