I'm doing this because I used to listen a lot of music and search for it. My dj days seem to be over, but I'd like people to enjoy my tedious scanning. This doesn't mean that this would be totally new music to you, but it's not mainstream either.
First I present you Bonobo - Kong
I think this would fall under the category of trip-hop or left field hip-hop. The fan made music video sparkles with life and is nicely tuned with the song. I could not help laughing to the elephants eating grass in pace with flute.
Second is Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - War
More heavy and maybe little violent sounding instrumental. This band is building on the influence of marching brass bands of New Orleans. Added drums creates a modern and more structured twist to it. And I like that old style music video very much.
Next comes Dennis Brown - Things In Life
I spotted the song from a movie Chungking Express: I just had to find it afterwards. "it's not everyday, you find good reggae".
To lighten up little, the last one is Girl Talk - All Day Mashup "Let It Out"
I don't know too much about girl talk. I just think it's possibly biggest tragedy in modern pop culture, that mashup art is extremely difficult to publish. But girl-talk is on Spotify!
I hope you enjoy. If you find this entertaining I might do it again.
What's that you say about brass bands? The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is incredible. They're from Chicago so I check their shows all the time but it appears they're always over in Europe or something.
Also (and I apologize for superfluously commenting on your post) you should check out flagamuffin's weekly music post. Your contributions would be most welcome: http://hubski.com/pub?id=65607
Also, if you're keen on changing it, you can edit it at any time. Look forward to checking it out when I'm not on my phone.
Set the expectations low and then over deliver. It's a wise tactic :)
I wrote that whole thing without being aware of #music. I guess I thought people in hubski would not be very interested in music so it would be kind of like experiment. I started using social news aggregation in Hacker News, so you might see where my naive "maybe they don't do music in hubski" is coming from. Right after I posted I found out that there is very alive #music going on and it surely does have high standard. But wow. I thought this would totally get buried. I guess I have to post another. And see that flagamuffins weekly.
Glad to have you amongst our "music" ranks. What's cool is that the same person that posts about music may also post about science, art, literature etc... That's why following "people" is as important as following topics in my opinion. If I like your taste in music, it's not unlikely that I'll enjoy your taste in those other topics as well. I look forward to seeing your contributions!
Bonobo's Black Sands is mindblowing. Perhaps I'm biased as a huge fan of trip-hop in general, but Bonobo absolutely enthralls and inspires me. He's got a new album coming out and is going on tour. I'm really looking forward to seeing him in a few months. From his upcoming album comes this awesome music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WF34N4gJAKE
If you like Girl Talk here's a clever way to listen to the latest album (and those of a few other artists) which breaks down the included tracks by cue:
I'm listening to Emancipator - Anthem, dancing around like a ballerina.
Bonobo and Girl Talk are so, so, so good. I also love Mitch Mash for mash-ups, he's always coming out with good stuff. Thanks for introducing me to Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, that was a really cool track!
