So I'm new to this site and still getting a bit confused navigating around. I really like to listen to people's stories about this site.
For me, I've read about this site a couple of times in Reddit and would like to give it a try today. Plus I get a bit fed up reading all the comments (but this is another topic). So everyone share your stories!
I am a new member as well and essentially, I am searching for an internet forum that facilitates a high quality of discourse. I define the quality of discourse as a function of two properties: a breadth of perspective and the depth of discussion. Unfortunately, these two factors are often at odds with each other so the objective is to find a suitable Goldilocks middle. Low Breadth discussions are often conducive to Depth but are limiting in that they are insulated from dissenting perspectives (see circlejerk). On the other hand, high Breadth discussions are frequently polarizing and lead to visceral, antagonistic arguments to the detriment of constructive analysis (see flamewars). It is a bit too early to tell if hubski can deliver an acceptable confluence but I am hopeful.
Welcome mustwarnothers and CatoftheCanal! joelg236's link below is an awesome introduction to Hubski, I highly recommend checking it out. My favorite feature of Hubski are "badges". Once you've been on the site long enough and have garnered the appreciation of your fellow hubskiers, you will eventually have the ability to give a "badge". These take a while to be able to give so their kind of a big deal. Under the "badges" link on the left under "discover" you will find the content that was deemed quality enough to be "badged" by someone. I'd check out these posts/comments for a good starting place and if you like some of the content there, by all means "follow" those users. Also, check out the #tngpodcast which is a podcast that I produce and the Videocast that steve puts together, they include members of the Hubski community. Good luck and if you have any questions, feel free to pm me. Also, we are very open to suggestions.
I came hear from reddit because I hated seeing the top comment on every single thread inevitably be an inside joke, or just a dumb pun. I want analysis on a news article about government and privacy, and instead I get a pun? So that's why I moved over, in the famed TrueReddit post. I like hubski a lot, the people here are nice and are eager to have great discussions.
