I'm flying in to New York next week. Should I be worried?

IF: Eric Adams decided NYC needed to "do something" when Russia invaded Ukraine

and IF: Eric Adams' staff paid him the least amount of attention possible, but he kept bringing it up for a couple weeks, such that the absolute minimum amount of money and effort were expended

THEN: this is exactly the sort of low-effort airball you would anticipate 4-5 months later

It might have even been done by early-mid March but there was waffling about whether it would panic anyone. And someone might have decided to put it out because dammit, it came out of our budget and we won't be strung up for making useless PSAs our useless mayor demanded uselessly.

AEC101 is "get underground." If anyone associated with this had bothered to look at a civil defense manual they would have discovered the plan has always been the subways etc. But that would have involved coordinating with MTA and I'll bet MTA wasn't at all entertained by any of this so instead they went with "get indoors."

So we should run to a subway if the sirens start sounding? Got it. Hopefully they don't flood.

No, don't worry.

It's almost 100% likely that nothing nuclear bomb-y is going to happen in the short term, at least for several months, and very likely much longer than that.

"Almost 100%", eh? In the short term, at least for several months? Thanks for the reassurance, am_Unition.

Nukes aside, covid numbers here in Melbourne and in NY suggest we mightn't've picked the best time for travelling.

I mean like 99.998% unlikely for nuke exchange within the next several weeks. You're good :).

My sister brought covid back to Melbourne from a wedding in Ireland a few weeks ago, so you're welcome!

And I just had it in Switzerland last week. Not related to sister's case. Working on a trip report.

Wear a good mask on your long flight (kn95 or n95 or the Ozzy equivalent).
