Until I was 19: Plourin, France Then 1 year: Coimbra, Portugal Then 3 months: Paraty, Brazil Then 6 months: Besançon, France Then 3 months: Lisbon, Portugal Then 2 years: Dresden, Germany Then 4 years: Vilnius, Lithuania Then 6 months: Berlin, Germany Then 2 years: Innsbruck, Austria Currently: Vienna, Austria
No very tangible reason, really. That might sound cliche but my question would rather be "why not". I started with an Erasmus year and never really settled anywhere since, moving where I find something to do. I guess I would be much closer from my birthplace if I hadn't kinda caught this "virus". Overall the EU has brought a very comfortable "environment" to move around like within one country.
Hello Blackwind. Yes I can although it didn't come easy. I learned a bit in school but really forgot and later had the chance to get a job in Germany where speaking german was not mandatory. Even now my German is quite broken but that's my official work language so I guess it's still fine. I don't know Western Germany much and Austria is quite a different beast. Dresden was a cozy place for a start, midway between Berlin and Prague (i.e. so much to see) yet a bit lost in the middle of nowhere. Either there or in Berlin, I really liked Eastern Germany. You often get a village feeling, where you don't need to move outside your district.
There are many reasons to like or not a place and nostalgy tends to twist the feelings we had at a given moment... but overall I agree, Berlin and maybe London are indeed the two cities I have seen and where I can best see myself enjoying the lifestyle
