Yes I can although it didn't come easy. I learned a bit in school but really forgot and later had the chance to get a job in Germany where speaking german was not mandatory. Even now my German is quite broken but that's my official work language so I guess it's still fine.

I don't know Western Germany much and Austria is quite a different beast.

Dresden was a cozy place for a start, midway between Berlin and Prague (i.e. so much to see) yet a bit lost in the middle of nowhere. Either there or in Berlin, I really liked Eastern Germany. You often get a village feeling, where you don't need to move outside your district.
