Imagine a lifelong friendship with John McCain, only to then be like "Yeah, Trump calling him weak because he got caught and became a POW makes me wanna hitch my wagon to Trump!" Makes no sense without blackmail.

I mean, it could be simpler, in that he hitched his horse to Trump when Trump was getting reasonably popular, and lacks the courage to change now.
