I LOVE THIS STUFF. Things that, once learned, make sense on a fundamental, common-sense level.... but were so hard to invent! "If it had been a snake, it woulda bit ya!"
I SWEAR we did this experiment in 8th grade science class back in the '80s. Same class where the teacher stood up with a tear in his eye and told us we'd all remember the day Fleischmann and Pons discovered cold fusion. The fact that I remember doing this and it not being at all controversial leads me to believe that the explanation is a good deal more simplistic than it needs to be.
