Beer and mead making is yet another hobby I need to get back into - it's been about a year and a half since I made anything at all (forgive me father for I have sinned). I did it really seriously for many years (entered compeitions, won awards, etc), then less and less as I let other things take up my time. It is so rewarding though, I really need to sort out my gear, get some malt, and get a batch going.

Ask me anything about bees and beekeeping - they are fascinating and lots of fun.

Curious: As someone that is a fan of beer, I'm wondering what type of beer you drink at home when you're not making your own? Favorites?

I love all the Belgian beers very much, and I'd have to say my fav is probably Chimay blue. I also really like a local micro-brew called Epic Pale Ale, it's very hoppy and reminds me of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

I make a pretty decent Hoegaarden White clone. Mine has a bit more body, slightly higher alcohol content, but flavour-wise, it's pretty close. The key to that one is I ranch the yeast from a 4-pack of Hoegaarden White and use that; plus the bitter orange peel and coriander-seed spicing. It's a crowd pleaser.

I love Chimay blue. Have you ever tried Hitachino Nest? It's a great Japanese Ale, check it out.

Your Hoegaarden clone sounds awesome.

Hitachino is pretty amazing, and what's more amazing is that a bar two blocks form my house just started carrying it on draft, the first time I've seen that in Det.

I've never seen Hitachino on tap.... anywhere. What's the name of the place in Detroit? I'd like to try that next time in there.

Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company. Corner of Woodward and Alexandrine.

Thanks.

Thanks. I will keep an eye out for it, but we don't get a huge selection of imports over here. Almost none of the great micro-brewed beers that have risen up in the last 20 years or so in the USA, it's very sad.

That is sad. But it's all the more incentive to begin brewing again.

edit: My father used to brew and he said his first batch was the best he ever made. He spent years trying to top it.
