Wow -- less than 60 years from his theoretical work to a human in space. If only he'd lived to be 100 he would have seen Sputnik.

It's an interesting example of how someones limitations can lead to a great things. If he weren't stricken nearly deaf at such a young age, he may never have generated such fantastic work.
