I still think the first 80% of this movie holds up to episodes IV and V, everything up to Endor and the Ewoks is a great film. It does suffer from some of the problems of IV and V, such as forced dialogue but it feels just as operatic. The rest, not so much.

I agree with you pretty much 100% here. In fact, I think the Emperor/Luke/Vader dynamic is one of most compelling dramatic conflicts in the series. But those teddy bears take me out of it, and Jedi in many parts seems like it's the film where Lucas first really decided that he cared most about delighting children and advancing Star Wars merchandising.
