Underwater swimmer Hannah Fraser has been fascinated with mermaids since she was three years old.
Hannah, 36, an Australian who now lives in LA, made her first mermaid tail at the age of nine, after seeing the film Splash with Daryl Hannah.
Now she works as a model, actress and performer, swimming with whales, dolphins, stingrays and even sharks.
I recently stayed at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. My room had a birds eye view of the pool. At night the pool area turns in to a club and there are mermaids swimming in the pool. They make for quite the view. Who knows, maybe Hannah was one of them or at the very least consulted them?

Apparently it's somewhat widespread. Here's an interview with another mermaid:

Mermaid Shelly's tail looks a bit more crafty. -Meaning fake. Interesting that there is this whole subculture of mermaid folk.
There is a guy at the pool we swim at that swims like a dolphin. Sometimes when it is crowded people split lanes. I once asked if he wouldn't mind splitting, and he replied: "I just should warn you, I am the fastest one in the pool." He seemed very serious but he is not the fastest. He swims like a dolphin, after all. After he swam off like a dolphin, I split a lane with someone else.

Don't get me wrong. I looks like a tough kick, and there are a few swimmers in the pool that do it from time to time. But this guy is all dolphin, all the time. It was mainly odd, because I'm not sure why it would matter if he was the fastest in the pool, and I'm not sure how he came to the belief.

This guy sounds like quite the character. I just envisioned him as Jim Carey in the Cable Guy.

Interesting. I wonder how it affects the swimmers agility and efficiency of movement.

Yeah, I'm sure it was "her form" you were studying. Let's face it, she's one nice looking mermaid!
Like easynow, I too have seen "mermaids" at high end hotels and they do seem to swim pretty well.
