Honestly, I find this post pretty unfocused. It's scared of efficient light bulbs because they could be used for surveillance while ignoring that 91% of the US' adult population (source) has a device in their pocket that can more clearly and more accurately record, with a time and pretty accurate position stamp, everything they say, whether they record it or not. Did I mention that device can track location? And then they use the device to browse websites that are known to be monitored by the governments and corporations alike such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram (and I think SnapChat?). We already give the watchers most of our data with our cellphones, there is most likely nothing that these LED bulbs could give them that they would not get otherwise.
You're right, it's not the best post ever, and the majority of the population doesn't seem to have a problem with helping the government track and record their every move and word. I can safely assume that my mom won't find this newsworthy in the slightest. However there's a small crowd, even on Hubski, that likes to stay up to date on privacy and surveillance matters. That includes you! If you found this post interesting enough to comment on it, I've done my job.
Except that now we won't be able to leave those devices at home so we can't be tracked. Not everyone has a phone and not everyone has data. There are also people out there who intentionally don't use such things because of the ability for others to listen in. I do agree that for most people out there really isn't that different but there those out there who it does effect not to mention how it can strengthen the government's hold on the people.
But then think about it. Even if YOU leave the devices at home - all it does is make it a tiny bit harder for whoever's watching to track you. At least three out of four people you meet around you will also have a phone. If they record their voice, or if someone accidentally takes a picture of you, they can cross-reference with THEIR data and obtain it anyway. Even if you don't use it, others do and that's where the downfall is. On the flipside, I do agree that we should lessen the hold on people - but we have, in my opinion, bigger issues at hand.
This literally scares the shit out of me and I get enjoyment out of nightmares.
