Wow, the Game/Show writers need to do more research. The critics of monopoly are well aware of what the real rules are. They are not the kind of people who don't read the rule book. Oddly, they cite some of the critics' complaints at 1:20, but then never actually proceed to respond to them. I am pretty sure that even playing by the exact rules, monopoly is still a roll-and-move game. The whole video is a non-sequiter. All they had to do was read BGG forums for intelligent discussion on the mechanics of Monopoly. For instance, the chance cards offer a great opportunity for a catch-up mechanic (ie cards that hurt winning players) but is mostly squandered for the random "Collect/pay x dollars" (the house repairs card is the single exception to this). I have played monopoly with a competitive group, and it definitely has its issues. There is usually one or two big trades, which establish the 'haves' (who can form monopolies on good sets) and the others who are left out. Of those left out, it is obvious they will lose, but they are forced to continue rolling. That is not fun. This is just one example of a game element that would be considered a flaw had Monopoly been released today.
Wait... What? No, Monopoly is a shitty game. When half the world plays a game called Monopoly, and they don't use those rules. That other game is not called Monopoly. So basically you're telling me a game that was designed to show people how shitty monopolies make life and to cause strife in the players, that ultimately achieves its goals by making everyone fucking hate this game and the people playing it, is actually a fun game that we're all playing incorrectly. Nope, we are. Hating it is the point. The 1920s Quaker community took strongly to the game and made a lot of changes that shape the one we know today.
Monopoly is not a bad game, we're just playing it wrong.
