The Leaf is everything the Bolt is and more except… the promised range. But give Nissan some time - I think we'll see some higher range options coming. I love my Leaf. Every single time I get behind the wheel I am pleased with my decision to lease one. If the battery grows in the next few years I will seriously consider buying one. (but the leases are amazing if you can deal with the mileage - A buddy just leased another one for about $240/mo with 15k miles per year). And there are still rumblings of a $30k Tesla, but I'm not holding my breath.
When I was in school studying to build electric cars, we were told that a gallon of gas has the energy density of a thousand pounds of batteries. Hadn't changed in 20 years. Then everyone started carrying cell phones. I think that weight has dropped by a factor of two or three; haven't really been keeping up on it, just know enough to know the barrier fell and fell hard. The original Honda Insight had a soldered-together pack of NiCd D-cells, if I recall correctly; we be making all sorts of crazy progress. I almost put money down on an Aptera. Then they said "no, we're making it front wheel drive instead" and I was glad I didn't. Too bad. That thing was awesome.
