Charles Schulz's Peanuts comics often conceal the existential despair of their world with a closing joke at the characters' expense. With the last panel omitted, despair pervades all.

http://garfieldminusgarfield.net/ I also enjoy seeing this from time to time. It really makes Jon seem like a sociopath.

What makes these things funny seems to be the characters (who we all have some idea of) doing things just short of a punchline. That uncomfortable feeling you get when you don't finish your ice cream.
