Well what I would suggest is doing it the same way Reddit does it. After (arbitrary number) 25 comments, give an option to expand more. Or Load More or something of the like.
I know that works, but I'm wondering if it can be done better. For example, decaying indentation along with "load more." Or some sort of reset pushing back to the left (not necessarily all the way) at a certain level.
You can still reply if depth is limited, it just won't push farther right.

I kinda liked the sliding idea, like moving the hubwheel up and down (or left to right) as necessary to fit the text.
