If you're like me, deciding to stop checking a site is one thing, but actually following through is another. Help yourself break the habit of checking a site by blocking it from your phone entirely.
This method is often used on computers but I don't think many people are aware that it can be done on Android too (if your phone is rooted).
Use this app to edit the hosts file, adding an entry for 127.0.0.1 / www.reddit.com
It will take a few minutes to affect your browser, but after the IP is re-cached you won't be able to load anything from that site anymore. Also works for preventing ads or data reporting if you're more crafty.
Unfortunately I lack a smart phone and data plan so I have never been a mobile browser. I tried installing a filter in Chrome, but I always ended up either just going around it or simply pouring my time into something else online (YouTube, 4Chan, etc.). It was like playing whack-a-mole. I would block a site only to have this sort of nervous itch to browse. It didn't matter what I browsed, it just has to be online and distract my attention form whatever was at hand. I spend an unhealthy amount of time online, probably 7-10 hours a day during the week and 15-20 hours during the weekend. I feel like it is a serious handicap. I find it really hard to apply myself for any significant length of time. for me, doing homework or studying for a test before 9:00 pm the night before is almost unheard of. As a result, I often stay up until 2:00 am or later doing work only to wake up at 7:00 or 8:30 am the next day. I have tried so hard to stop, but at times it really feels like I can't.
I've definitely been there. I used to use Chrome Nanny but it was a bit too easy to disable the block so it didn't really work for me. I have definitely cut down on my internet time, mostly by reading a lot more books. I recently realized that well known authors are well known for a reason most of the time, and they have much more interesting things to say than the average blogger or forum poster. Don't get me wrong, I still spend a lot of time on forums but I do feel a little more balanced recently and not so overstimulated by /u/_____'s very-important-out-his-ass-opinion regarding Iraq.
The problem with host based blocking is that I'll just unblock it when addiction sets in. For it to work, I can't have access to the device filtering me. For me to work in general, I have to have access to the device filtering me. Plus proxies, VPNs, Tor, etc can get around them even if it were a standalone device I couldn't control.
Where there's a will there's a way I guess. :D For me it's good to have that quick reminder when I habitually try to open the site. Enough to disrupt my thought process and remind me that I'm trying not to visit it as much. Yes, I could always go re-enable it, but opening up the hosts file is not already an addiction so it's much easier to avoid.
Relevant self-discipline/torture software: SelfControl. Desktop-only, might be Mac only. Add sites to your "Blacklist," set the timer and commence ultimate distraction-free productivity. I used this many times in the past before I was able actually get work done on my own accord, and it was frustratingly effective. Basically, once you set the timer you can not access those websites by any means, at all until the time is up. If you uninstall SelfControl, restart your computer, use any other browser or private browsing- nothing. It's deadlocked, unless you get a new hard drive.
