My housemate is definitely making a trip for work, and I'm seriously considering making the flight out for it. I know we have quite a few people here who'd be interested, and insomniasexx is only a hop, skip and a jump away from it. I'd love to have a mini, hubski tech-meetup. Other tech hubskiers? mk, forwardslash, ecib and minimum_wage (? wasn't sure), and I know I'm forgetting others. If any of you know others that would be interested, please shoutout to them too.
Also, Vegas.
I'll only go if kleinbl00 goes. I'm also doing comicon in San Diego July 27th weekend whatever so I don't know if I can handle another huge conference so soon. Maybe though. I did fly to freaking Boston for 48 hours. and it was so worth it.
While there are few things I enjoy more than "not being in Vegas", "not being in Vegas in August" is one of them. "Not being at the Rio in Vegas for $200 in August for shit I barely understand" is in a truly rarified circle of pleasure as far as I'm concerned. That, combined with the fact that August is a stupendously lucrative month for me, is likely to limit my exposure. Sorry.
Not planning on going, no. It's pretty hard for me to justify going to conferences outside of the pacific northwest, unfortunately.
Man, we were just talking about that. Obviously you should bring a laptop and a cell phone, but never fucking connect them to anything ever, and then still have it be a basic clone of a computer, and still flash your BIOS after and swap out your hard drive. I don't even know how to keep my phone safe enough. Airplane mode isn't enough. Off isn't enough, and I can't remove my battery with my new phone, so... fucked? Yeah.
If someone were really malicious, they could just bring a giant electromagnet and send your data to the great beyond. Then again, I'm extra paranoid and wouldn't bring a hardback book to DEFCON without worrying that it might be hacked.Man, we were just talking about that. Faraday bags for cell phones were all the rage after last defcon as I remember. There were a lot of write-ups and at least one Kickstarter. They existed before then , but I don't remember them being a "thing" in the more mainstream tech press before last year.
