Yes, for many people, debts outstrip assets by a pretty good margin. If, for example, you're underwater on your mortgage and your 401(k) isn't hefty enough to make up the difference, you have negative wealth. That's why the income and wealth distributions aren't always super well aligned. What's amazing about this chart is that it implies that lots of people fall into the negative wealth category.
