So, I gave myself a couple days to listen to it a few times. And I have to say I'm disappointed. Disappointed in the lyrics and the production quality. It's just not my style, and not what I was hoping from Gambino who I love. I love is I Am Just a Rapper tapes, ROYALTY, Camp, etc. This just isn't what I was expecting. It's slow and mellow. Kept waiting for him to go hard and was let down. It's not bad, I'd just put it below a lot of his other stuff. I liked Shadows, Zealots of Stockholm, Pink Toes, but that's about it. Rest was hip-hop elevator music. Even saying that I feel kind of bad, but that's all I could come up with. I just feel like studio albums and releases shouldn't be eclipsed by your mixtapes. For reference a few of my fav tracks from past stuff are Fire Fly, Heartbeat, R.I.P, New Prince, Bonfire, Hold You Down, Bitch Look At Me Now, etc. Again, just my opinion, don't hate me. :) I mean what happened to shit like this? "Release a new track, All blogs go to heaven."
So you'd agree with this review? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jD5_3MZlqM
Hah, yeah. Hadn't seen that yet, but I kind of agree with him. I don't agree with his "lack of talent" comments though. I think Gambino is talented, I just didn't care for this particular album. He made a good point at the end that he felt like he was surrounded by "yes men" well making this album, and no one stopped to tell him some of this stuff was whack.
I don't think he really says Gambino lacks talent: http://youtu.be/7jD5_3MZlqM?t=1m43s I'm not really knowledgable on music so I can't justify my point of view much, but I don't think i'll be listening to this album again.
