- The ostensible point of these sites is to give the public a quick way to glean the unsavory history of a neighbor, a potential date or anyone else. That sounds civic-minded, until you consider one way most of these sites make money: by charging a fee to remove the image. That fee can be anywhere from $30 to $400, or even higher. Pay up, in other words, and the picture is deleted, at least from the site that was paid.

All they have to do is make it illegal for sites like these to ask people to people pay to take their photos down. These sites wouldn't exist without these payments and legitimate news sources and sites can still post the public information. Just eliminate the revenue from the equation.

Ads are barely a revenue stream these days. Perhaps if you have legit ads, perhaps if you have a lot of viewers. But long gone are the days of having a site, throwing up some ads, and calling it a day.

So I just went to justmugshots to see what ad platform they were using and generate an approximation. I don't see any ads. Thistis their only revenue stream: http://www.justmugshots.com/orders (from a button that is prominently displayed on every page)
