I don't eat breakfast. I haven't for the past 20 years or so. I'm thin, and my weight has remained constant for the last two decades.
I have always found skipping breakfast or putting off eating until around 11 am (when I first begin to actually feel hungry* ) to help me avoid ridiculous calorie counts at the end of the day. I find breakfast problematic. And I hate the way everyone buys into the idea that it's "so important;" it was frequently commented on by my coworkers that I skipped breakfast and that it was inadvisable. Now I eat a small yogurt in the morning. It's a concession.
Yes, I think the importance of breakfast is a modern idea, probably pushed for commercial interests. If I eat early, I often find myself feeling hungrier by lunchtime than I would have been if I skipped breakfast altogether. I feel best having a coffee, and then first eating at lunch.
