Pinterest: I don't make crafts, and I possess male genitalia.

Would you mind explaining the bolded quote? Maybe it's because I have a Pinterest and possess male genitalia that is causing me to be confused. My inference from the quote is that there is something inherently emasculating about being a male with a Pinterest. Perhaps it's due to thinking that something predominately feminine leads to that. Which I disagree with. Or I could be missing your point entirely.

On pintrest;

I had a very tech savvy teacher whom I am impressed didn't murder all the boys when they assumed that her husband owned the computers in the relationship. She listened to Nirvana a lot and it was always funny when the teenage boys thought she was intruding even though she had been a teenager when Nirvana was big and if anything had a bigger "right" to like nirvana.

I think I accidentally found her pintrest once. She had pinned a lot of awesome and funny things and I left the fuck out of there cause she had used her maiden name (that she tried VERY hard to never say in class) and everything to make sure stupid teenager didn't find it and I was not going to ruin that for her.

Anyway, pintrest is awesome for teachers since teenagers and especially boys are like "NOPE ONLY MIDDLE AGED LADIES ON THERE NOTHING TO SEE"

I mean, it was so "funny" to see the teenage boys be all "Yeah, we're so smart she doesn't know what were saying about her" and me be like "She did half her teachers education in English an also knows Greek. She does know, and it is hurtful and you are DICKS"

Fellow pinterest-using dude. It's fantastic for making inspiration boards when you're working on something creative. Like when I was designing my sister's wedding invites, I made a board called "wedding invites" and pinned a whole bunch of shit I thought was cool until I had a clearer idea of what look I was after. I have that extension that lets me pin stuff from all around the web when I'm browsing, it's awesome to have an ever-expanding catalogue of creative/inspirational bookmarks.

Also a user. And its funny because guys don't realize that pinterest is THE secret weapon for people who don't know or refuse to tell you what to get them for their birthday/a holiday.

I've gotten so many "this is exactly what I wanted, how did you know!?"s just by hitting up people's "wishlist" boards, or their equivalent.

swedishbadgergirl  ·  3392 days ago  ·  link  ·

Haha, that is perfect. I think I'm going to get a pintrest now, it sounds like a nice social media network.

Pinterest is 72% female: or around the same percentage that Reddit is male. In addition, I've found that there is a wide perception of Pinterest as a female website, as much sense as that makes. You're taking things for what I've written that I don't mean.

ButterflyEffect  ·  3393 days ago  ·  link  ·

I'm not disagreeing with you with the percentages, however, what I read is this:

App: Reason you don't use the app.

Sure, you don't make crafts, that's fine. Many people aren't into crafts. However, seeing the second clause and specification that it's a female website makes it come across as if you don't use Pinterest because you're a male, and that's a site for females. That in turn comes across as sexist.

That might not have been your intent and I'm not saying "wtf u sexist i hate u" but it's worth considering what could and could not be viewed as offensive in the realm of sexism (well, and everything else).

I, too, have a Pinterest account yet I, too, feel that it often offers my life about as much marginal utility as an eyebrow pencil.

Just like Reddit doesn't have to be about strawman feminist memes and how much your parents oppress you by making you go to church that one time, Pinterest doesn't have to be about pinata cookies and melted crayon collages.

But it is.

Yet it is also so awesome.

swedishbadgergirl  ·  3392 days ago  ·  link  ·

And CRAYON LIPSTICK. Like my lips can be any colour as soon as I get around to actually make it.

And eyebrow pencils are the shit. Like, my hair is very pale so my eyebrows are invisible and they do so much for a face.

Erhm...

I think I'm starting to see your point.

ButterflyEffect  ·  3392 days ago  ·  link  ·

Pinterest is the ultimate "wow that looks great but let's be honest: I won't be making it anytime soon" site. I mostly use it to look at nice things and think about aesthetic for when I eventually have nice things.

That link is amazing, by the way.

Sometimes you find fun shit. this led to this:

swedishbadgergirl  ·  3392 days ago  ·  link  ·

Okay, since I'm from Sweden I think everyone should have made a gingerbread house during their childhood.

We would make them in kindergarten every year when I was a kid. In the area where I live there is a big competition around a theme where people build amazing things.

Ech, I suppose. There's no way to defend myself. Believe what you will about what that was supposed to mean. Poorly considered, maybe? I don't know what to tell you that would make a different conclusion you could come to.

swedishbadgergirl  ·  3392 days ago  ·  link  ·

Like, it is so accepted to just say sexist things sometimes - it isn't a personal flaw - it happens to everyone. It isn't a personal thing.

Thank you. I might need to hear that.

kleinbl00  ·  3393 days ago  ·  link  ·

80 percent, in fact. 92% of pins are made by women.
