Okay, honestly I'd try to guesstimate what your living expenses are going to be for the next year or so and make sure you have 6 months saved up. Assuming you're an American afterwards I'd contribute to an IRA. Check out /r/financialindependence

Ignore the hoolah on the media and idiots in /r/investing. Dollar Cost Averaging. Just pick a dollar amount each month and put it in like clockwork. I'm assuming you won't be looking to retire for another two decades at minimum so we're playing the long game here. Remember, even in 2008 nobody lost money in the markets unless they panicked and sold.
I'm pursuing financial independence (shoutout to /r/financialindependence) so I'm hoping to be done with "working for the man" in a decade or so. I'll be 31-32. I don't plan to own a home anytime soon. Instead I want to overland around the world at a leisurely pace. Once I get back I'll buy some land, build a barn/house, and restore Land Cruisers for fun and no profit. May even start a business or freelance. Not sure. Sure as hell not doing I.T work anymore, though.
