Just got an answer from the graduate school in Heidelberg. The accepted me, and the lab that I wanted to join also wants me. Problem? No money ><

So here goes the next struggle...

Edit:

Actually, today is great day. Getting a "Yes" from the group I am interested in just makes me feel good :)

I will try to explain my current situation.

I applied to the graduate schools and 3 PIs. Visited all the groups and fell in love with the last lab I visited. Funnily, it was one that I did not expect to be this amazing. But the people were nice, international and really warm. They do amazing research in how chronic pain manifests and which molecular mechanisms lead to it. They also work on how the body regulates its temperature in the hypothalamus.

I got a "Yes" from the graduate school. But, they do not give scholarships, so the financing has to come from the group that eventually takes me.

The group that I liked (group 3) was one that did not have an open position advertised, they still invited me to the interview. I talked to the PI today and he said that he needs to talk to my previous PIs and decide in 2 weeks. He also mentioned that he worries that he will not be able to pay me. We will see, I hope it works out.

I also had an interview with another group (group 1). One that I did not apply to, but was delegated to by mistake. I applied for the PIs husband, not her. I only found out once I was there. They do interested research, and I was interested. However, I did not get the chance to talk to the group and they said some things that worried me, but I didn't think much about it. Later on the same day, a student from my 2nd interview (group 2) told me that the PI from group 1 is really strict, and I should really think about whether I want to go there.

At the end, I had my favorite, Group 3 followed by group 2 and 1.

A few hours ago I got an email from the PI from group 1, she is offering me a position. The position there is financed already.

Now I have to decide, I have a week. I don't have a good feeling about group 1. Leaning towards rejecting her offer.

Now I am worried about a situation that group 3 will not be able to finance me and I will stand without any group to join. It is not easy to decide...

YAY!!!

But they are not offering you any money?? BOO.

The prof you want to work with might have secret stashes somewhere. Begin the conversation!

Graduate school in Germany is free, or no? I know that doesn't apply to all programs. And then there's CoL, fees, etc.

Applying for them is free. There are some that hand out scholarships and ones that do not.

This one supplies the members with really good seminars/workshops, an advisory committee, pay for travel to conferences, bi-annual retreats and loads of social stuff
