The worst thing that the US/EU could do is keep supplying enough equipment to the various opposition groups in sufficient quantity to prolong, rather than end the war. The trouble is that there is no attractive and achievable end game from the US/EU perspective, which is preventing the halt or increase in supplies or direct military action.
