Estimated at 1300 people dead. 100,000 in the conflict to date. I am fucking livid. The amount of people screaming we shouldn't get involved when there's genocide being perpetrated. The lack of remorse from Congress when they say they only want to get involved when it serves the US interests. The people who don't understand the difference between involvement and war. Obama backing off his 'red line' comments. Fuck Assad.
The worst thing that the US/EU could do is keep supplying enough equipment to the various opposition groups in sufficient quantity to prolong, rather than end the war. The trouble is that there is no attractive and achievable end game from the US/EU perspective, which is preventing the halt or increase in supplies or direct military action.
It should also be noted that nobody is really sure whether this was lethal gas or riot control gas (that can still kill). The NY Times did an article about the attacks and even they wouldn't definitively say that it was a gas attack as its being presented. Even if it crosses the red-line, why get involved? There's three fronts, a rash of groups involved all fighting for a different cause, and for all intents and purposes is unwinable. We might feel good about ourselves, but there isn't a clear group to fight, and no real way to restore peace without military control of the country (Which mean installing a new head of state). There's a lot of stuff going on in Syria, and I really don't know what to think. On one hand I would like to see peace. But on the other hand I don't know how anybody can make that happen.
I don't remember how I stumbled on this link this morning, but here is a site that seems to be dedicated to what's been happening in Syria. A word of warning: this is extremely graphic.
