People on reddit are running around trying to say that reddit was just looking at pictures and it's all the media's responsibility. While it's admirable that people wanted to help, the moment that turns into speculation or unsanctioned investigation it's just plain damaging. It's a steadfast rule that in this situation people will start witch-hunting. I want to say people should know better, but of course they won't. Instead I think I should say that if you participate in the mob, don't delude yourself; you are responsible.
I think part of the problem arises from the fact that to a degree the help was actually solicited. The FBI attempted to crowdsource some picture/data collation. Of course, we knew the moment we heard that it would mean inevitable false accusations. It was the internet's collective job to gather as many resources as they could for the FBI; the problem was when they began drawing conclusions from it, which they really had no place doing.
