Reminds me a lot of "Learning To Be Me" by Greg Egan. You should definitely read it. It's a short story.

I enjoyed the story. It's a great glimpse in to what would be a crowning moment in a persons life but told in a way that makes it feel, at times, as if it's so routine that the person is only having an appendix removed. The use of the Genesis verse at the outset really added an important dimension to the telling, that was smart of you. Reading stories like this always make me want to go stick my hands in some dirt. Very well done!
